Hamamelis mollis ' Wisley Supreme'

Hamamelis mollis 'Wisley Supreme'

The Chinese witch hazel is hard to distinguish from the hybrids between Chinese and Japanese forms:  the leaves are slightly hairy and the flowers may be smaller than some hybrids, but they have a stronger sweet scent.  The shrubs have the same open, architectural shape, but it is from this parent that some of the Hamamelis x intermedia cultivars get their habit of holding onto old leaves. This photo is from the Scott Arboretum in Pennsylvania.
