Iris unguicularis

The soft violet-blue flowers of the Algerian Iris appear as a winter surprise among its leathery evergreen leaves. Unfortunately the leaves are twice as tall as the flowers, and die messily but you can cut them back early in the autumn to avoid damaging flower buds.
