Looking after your Hippeastrum

Hippeastrum are commonly called amaryllis but are actually a South American bulb (the real Amaryllis belladonna will grow outdoors in the UK and is from South Africa). To get your Hippeastrum to flower again, feed and water it as the flowers fade, move it outdoors for the summer and cut back old foliage in late September; move to a cool, bright position, (around 13°C), for eight to ten weeks, then move the bulbs to a warm position and resume watering. Feed with a balanced fertiliser once the bulb is in active growth to encourage flower production.
