Cortaderia selloana 'Pumila'

After its recent publicity, we had better make Cortaderia selloana, the pampas grass, our plant of the day. One of the best, and smallest, cultivars is C. selloana 'Pumila' which only reaches about two metres in height  with its striking plumes - the straight species can be three! The dense clumps of jagged-edged evergreen leaves need annual clearing to get rid of dead material, and this needs VERY GOOD gloves, tough jacket and preferably a face shield - perhaps the pampas grass thieves will be identified in a line-up by their scars?
