Laurus nobilis

Bay leaves are generally used in bouquet garni nowadays, but once they were made into laurel wreathes for victorious Roman generals, and the smoke from burning leaves was inhaled by the Sibyl to stimulate her prophecies. This is the true or sweet bay, not the hedging laurel which is a Prunus.
