This is also sold as 'Kokoryu'. Black Mondo Grass has short clumps of strappy purple-black leaves, shading to green at the base, but it isn't a true grass - it has small bell-shaped mauve flowers on leafless stems in summer, and spreads by rhizomes. It needs full sun and well-drained soil, and some contrast to show off the leaves.
