Recognise willow aphids
10th November 2020
Colonies of the large willow bark aphid can build up rapidly on young growth of many types of Salix - as they have done here on the stems of the grafted 'White Cat' at Ryton - and they can look quite alarming. The aphids don't seem to have any significant effect on the tree's health or vigour, and they can be washed off with a hose jet, or 'squished' by hand.
