Eschscholzia californica
The californian poppy has silky petals above feathery grey-green foliage and thrives in gravel or dry soils. The classic species is tawny orange, but there are many cultivars now in different shades like 'Alba' , with creamy-white petals, 'Red Chief' which is scarlet, and many colourful mixes like 'Mission Bells' or 'Monarch Mixed'. It is grown as an annual, and single colours will come true from seed if no other cultivars are grown nearby.
