Cleome hassleriana

The Spider flower is a tall and unusual bedding plant from South America which flowers for months and can make a really substantial plant by the autumn.  Most seed strains are mixed but  'Helen Campbell' is pure white . Slugs and snails will eat young plants, but if it reaches maturity the Cleome's spiny stems and coarse leaves deter most pests - however it is related to brassicas and so susceptible to flea beetles and cabbage white butterfly caterpillars.
