Quite a few modern 'second early' or 'salad' potatoes have the old variety 'Pink Fir Apple ' in their parentage; while this gives them a delicious rather nutty flavour and an excellent texture, it can sometimes produce some very peculiar shapes, which is one of the reasons why 'Pink Fir Apple' fell out of favour.
