Caltha palustris
The kingcup or marsh marigold is a native wildflowerwhich begins to flower in ditches and streams as early as February but is most colourful in April, with yellow buttercup flowers standing up above glossy green leaves. After flowering leaves tend to blacken with powdery mildew, but cutting the plants back hard will promote new foliage and sometimes a second flush of flowers.
