Break up compacted soil

This tip of the Day is particularly for anyone with heavy or clay soils; walking on the border for pruning or other jobs during the wet spring will have compacted the ground, and now the dry weather has baked the surface until it cracks. It's important to open up the soil to let the roots of your plants grow properly so although it's really hard work with a hand fork, try to break up the plates of soil - you'll need to do so to weed anyway!
