This course is about planning the use of your greenhouse to make use of its full potential to provide a succession of fresh fruit and vegetables all year round.

On this course we cover the following:

Choice of “glasshouse” - Aluminium, wooden, polythene tunnels; cladding materials, the advantages and disadvantages of each

Site - selecting an appropriate site, correct orientation

Importance of cleanliness in a glasshouse environment

Protected cropping, - to increase the season of availability and integrate the glasshouse with other growing areas in the garden: cold frames, raised beds and the open ground

Importance of crop rotation - avoiding the build up of pest and diseases

Soil preparation for different groups of crops

Alternatives to growing in the soil - growing in raised beds, containers, choice of growing media and soilless growing systems

Choosing the best varieties -  Royal Horticultural Society recommendations

Producing a plan for your own greenhouse

Feeding at key stages of development

Providing adequate moisture throughout the season - ways to reduce the reliance on water, water conservation

Training plants to maximise on space

Harvesting and storage techniques - to keep produce fresh for longer

Dates and times - This is a ONE day programme.

This course runs from 09.30 to 15.30.

What qualification will I get? On completion of the programme you will be given a course completion certificate from the Academy of Practical  Horticulture.

Cost:? £95.00 plus V.A.T. at £19.00 for the complete course, total payable £114.00.

What else do I need to know? This is predominantly a theory course, therefore you need to comfortable casual clothing. However there will be walks on site to look at glasshouses and plants, where you will be required to wear suitable outdoor clothing and safety footwear.

What can I do after this course? You would be welcome to attend any of the short course or masterclasses that we offer, or perhaps (if not already studying one of them) one of the Royal Horticultural Society Courses at one of our centres.
